Name the calf
Time for a name that calf contest. As always, all suggestions are welcome. Names submitted (in the comments please) are put into a hat, one is drawn, and the winner gets to name the calf.
Your exciting (????) prize is to have a purebred Holstein heifer go through life with the name you chose on her registration papers. Previous names chosen this way have been Hattie, one of our best Jerseys, Bama Breeze, Veronica and a couple of others I can't think of just now. This girl has potential as a show heifer so her name could be up in lights so to speak (well, really, just up in a little picture frame over at the show but....)
The particulars on this baby...her mama's name is Frieland LF Volcano. Her sire is a Select Sires young bull, Kingdom. This baby is a bit special as she is only the second red and white Holstein female we have ever had here at Northview. The other one is her half sister, Magma. You can see a rather bad photo of her here.
Have fun....the name chosen will definitely be one that you submit, as we are plumb out of names at this particular time. Happy naming!
Lavinia?(a combo of Lava, and divine kind of thing) Dotty? Coffie Melange? Spot of Milk? better quit, before it gets too goofy... (thanks for the comment on my blog, btw....just had to come and see your farm - looks like you're up to your elbows with it (sorry for the pun :o) )
Pumice! I got tired of the job of naming calves for registrations so now we just use our prefix (Pieran), the sires number (eg. 22X)and the calfs numer (eg. 1U). The neighbors have to name colts and they have three baby name books that they refer to and another hereford breeder we know names everything beginning with the year letter which this year is a U. Now that's going to be a nightmare Ulysses!
Atlas? Kathmandu? Vesuvius? Paricutin? Domuyo! Sumatra? If it was a male i'd say Matterhorn. Well, here's a more sensible name: Etna. Yunno, to follow and old farmer tradition, as well as to carry on an old monarch tradition, you could name her Good Queen Bess!
Everyone, I just love these names and thank you for thinking of them for us.. Please just keep adding any that you think of...the more the better. It doesn't matter how funny or serious or anything. We once had a cow named Brock have a calf we named Broccoli, so have fun...we sure are.

I really like Elyse. It's this century's updating of Elsie the cow.

Call her "asaki." That way, you can introduce her...

Look at her markings. Africa is the only obvious name to use!
Princess Helen? (ie, Mt St Helens)
